To the untrained eye or individual, fitness space design and planning may tend to seem and look the same. But that notion can be very far from reality.
The differences lie within each step of the process, from the designer’s style to the ethos of the facility. And most importantly, the differences lie in the results.
What makes FitnessDesignGroup different from fitness equipment companies that offer more generalized layout services? The answer lies directly within the question itself. FDG is a full-service functional design firm, not simply a company that offers placement direction in support of one’s specific equipment. An important and fundamental difference in approach.
Whereas equipment companies are rightfully rooted in developing their products – FDG is rooted in the design development of our clients’ exercise spaces. This progression of experience development is essential to achieving differentiated outcomes, and what we do best. Our team is comprised of specialized architects and functional design consultants. This disciplined and professional approach leads to fresh results and sustainability in design.
Let’s take a deeper look …
What comes first?
Instead of an equipment-forward approach, FDG begins with the end-user requirement in mind. Before equipment can be placed, much less any specific brand of equipment, we must first assess the space through the lens of its opportunities and its limitations. How will the environment ultimately impact the end users’ expectations? Will it be inclusive? Will the offering appeal widely to the very constituency it seeks to serve? Will live or digital guidance lead the experience? Our process begins here, well before pen to paper.
We seek to understand spatial allocations and how energy zones work and flow. We take into consideration elements such as ceiling height, lighting, views, entryways, windows, pathways, and other space adjacencies. They are the building blocks for determining a sense of how people and energy will flow through the space.
Equipping each zone with the requisite gear is certainly important. But first, what flooring materials and transitions will be necessary to support the wide variability in training types present in today’s modern gym? Naturally, this can vary greatly depending on the facility type, specialization, location, and the end users’ demands. This step takes careful and thoughtful planning and design reference to ensure both fluidity and function are met. Certainly, esthetics will begin to also play a role here in this very foundational element of setting the stage for exercise.
Bringing the Vision to Life
Conceptual renderings can help non-design professionals better assess and anticipate intended outcomes. They can serve both as a guiding light for design development as well as smart marketing assets for other stakeholders. Our photorealistic rendering process is tailored more specifically to gym design and development. One of the biggest challenges in impactful gym design revolves around the delineation of functional space requirements for human movement vs. that of the equipment footprint itself. An enhanced visualization process in 3D can create a sense of space well before it must be constructed.
This level of depth, visualization, and customization requires skilled designers with special training to effect energizing results.
Results Designed to Inspire
We work to deliver an elevated experience in exercise for every one of our clients, every time, throughout the entire process. Every project is a blank canvas, and as we set our design approach in motion, we infuse energy and engagement into space we touch. A perfect synthesis of function + aesthetics.
Perhaps our greatest inspiration in partnering with clients is to develop the next generation of highly sought-after exercise experiences. Bringing form and function in support of their vision is our calling.
